An Employment-Based House Arrest Story of Redemption (Book One) — by Ihuoma C. Onwunali.

Marcus is a young warehouse worker in Newark, one bad decision away from losing everything. When he crosses the line, he doesn't get a cell — he gets an ankle monitor, a curfew, and a job he has to keep. Rebuilding Justice: An Employment-Based House Arrest Story of Redemption by Ihuoma C. Onwunali is the story of what happens when punishment comes with a paycheck and a second chance has a schedule.

The story

Newark, before sunrise. Marcus rides the bus to his warehouse shift, tired in the way the whole city is tired — everybody moving, everybody carrying something. Then Mal calls with easy money, and Marcus makes the choice people swear is temporary right before consequences become permanent.

What comes next isn't prison. It's EBHA — employment-based house arrest: an ankle monitor, movement windows, check-ins, and a job at Mercy General Hospital he cannot afford to lose. Between his mother's kitchen table, the night shift, and a neighborhood that watches everything, Marcus has to figure out whether a man can rebuild himself while the city keeps score.

Rebuilding Justice: An Employment-Based House Arrest Story of Redemption by Ihuoma C. Onwunali is Book One — about consequence, work, and the people who stay. It ends the way real change starts: not fixed, not finished, but alive. And trying.

Why this book was written

"I wrote this book because I believe we can do better than what we are doing now." — Ihuoma C. Onwunali, from the open letter at the front of the book. Rehabilitation means to come back: break an ankle and you heal, walk again, run again.

But for a non-violent, non-sex mistake, our answer is to take a person away — from family, work, and community — at $30,000 to $100,000 a year per person locked up. This story argues a different answer: keep a person working, contributing, and saving under structure — losing freedom of movement, not their place in the world.

The full letter opens the book, and it is the first thing you hear in the free sample above.

The Changenaire Book Club

Books we'd hand you in person.

We read a lot. Most business books don't survive the second chapter. These four did — each one earned its place on this shelf, and each one has something a builder can use the same week they read it.

Heads up: Book Club links are Amazon Associates links — if you buy through them, Changenaire earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, Changenaire earns from qualifying purchases.

Atomic Habits

James Clear

The most practical book on behavior change ever written for builders. Clear's argument is simple: you don't rise to your goals, you fall to your systems. Small habits, compounded, beat big motivation every time.

Why it earns its place: every entrepreneur runs on habits before they run on capital.

The Lean Startup

Eric Ries

The book that killed the business plan. Ries's case: build the smallest thing that tests your riskiest assumption, measure what happens, learn, repeat. Most startups die building something nobody wanted — this is the antidote.

Why it earns its place: validated learning is the cheapest education a founder can buy.

Shoe Dog

Phil Knight

The rare founder memoir that's honest about the ugly parts. Knight started Nike selling shoes from his car trunk and nearly lost the company a dozen times. Cash-flow crises, betrayals, lawsuits — it's all here, unvarnished.

Why it earns its place: the best reminder that every overnight success was a decade of near-death.

Zero to One

Peter Thiel, with Blake Masters

Thiel's provocation: competition is for losers — build something so new it creates its own category. Short, sharp, and contrarian in the way that forces you to examine your own assumptions about what to build.

Why it earns its place: it asks the question most founders avoid — what valuable company is nobody building?
