Marcus is a young warehouse worker in Newark, one bad decision away from losing everything. When he crosses the line, he doesn't get a cell — he gets an ankle monitor, a curfew, and a job he has to keep. Rebuilding Justice: An Employment-Based House Arrest Story of Redemption is the story of what happens when punishment comes with a paycheck and a second chance has a schedule.
The story
Newark, before sunrise. Marcus rides the bus to his warehouse shift, tired in the way the whole city is tired — everybody moving, everybody carrying something. Then Mal calls with easy money, and Marcus makes the choice people swear is temporary right before consequences become permanent.
What comes next isn't prison. It's EBHA — employment-based house arrest: an ankle monitor, movement windows, check-ins, and a job at Mercy General Hospital he cannot afford to lose. Between his mother's kitchen table, the night shift, and a neighborhood that watches everything, Marcus has to figure out whether a man can rebuild himself while the city keeps score.
Rebuilding Justice: An Employment-Based House Arrest Story of Redemption is Book One — about consequence, work, and the people who stay. It ends the way real change starts: not fixed, not finished, but alive. And trying.
Why this book was written
“I wrote this book because I believe we can do better than what we are doing now.” — Ihuoma C. Onwunali, from the open letter at the front of the book. Rehabilitation means to come back: break an ankle and you heal, walk again, run again.
But for a non-violent, non-sex mistake, our answer is to take a person away — from family, work, and community — at $30,000 to $100,000 a year per person locked up. This story argues a different answer: keep a person working, contributing, and saving under structure — losing freedom of movement, not their place in the world.
